1. Executive summary
Project 720 delivers the next generation of MyNetstar. The proposed December 2026 release is organised around four customer themes: Onboarding and Entry, Family and Location Sharing, SOS and Response, and Commerce and Payments. This document presents the best desired proposition so engineering can assess feasibility, size and cost. Final December inclusion of individual components is a Project 720 scope decision informed by that costing.
The scope is evidence-led. Phase 01 research (387 households) validated the concept at 4.51 of 5 appeal with a price corridor of R150 to R400, and showed that people, not vehicles, are what customers protect first. The largest unmet need is dispatched help reaching a loved one.
MyNetstar sells the existing consumer range in-app. Fitted vehicle products (Netstar Basic, Early Warning, Plus) follow a fitment fulfilment route. STARtag is a vehicle-linked recovery product. STARtag BLE is a separate Bluetooth tag proposition for pets and portable belongings, with its own purchase, delivery, QR activation and pairing journey. Onboarding is deliberately light: both a new customer and a recognised existing customer reach a usable Home quickly, then are prompted to create a Family Circle or add protection rather than being forced through circle creation before entry.
2. Product vision
MyNetstar enables South Africans to protect the people, vehicles and things that matter most through one trusted protection platform.
A household should get into the app quickly, see everyone safe on one map, reach verified help when eligible, and add the protection they need without leaving MyNetstar or the public website. The free family circle makes protection accessible to any household with a phone. Netstar products, from fitted vehicle recovery to STARtag BLE tags for pets and belongings, are bought, fulfilled and managed inside the app.
3. Product objectives
| Objective | How the release delivers it |
|---|---|
| Increase activation and reduce lead loss | One light onboarding gets new and existing customers to Home quickly. Heavy detail capture moves to the point of purchase, reducing the drop-off seen on the current online flow |
| Build daily engagement | The free family circle and live map serve the existing daily habit, with people, vehicles and STARtag BLE items on one map |
| Differentiate through verified emergency response | One-tap SOS with a verified protocol for eligible members. Entitlement model is a commercial decision (Section 6.3) |
| Convert and fulfil in-app | Fitted products and STARtag BLE are bought in-app with product-appropriate fulfilment: fitment for vehicle units, delivery and QR activation for STARtag BLE |
| Simplify onboarding for existing customers | Recognition by number loads the existing estate. No re-registration |
4. Success metrics
Measures are separated by funnel stage rather than combined into one activation number. Numerical values are working targets pending ratification.
| Stage | Event | Working target |
|---|---|---|
| Entry activation | Account created or recognised, and Home reached without unnecessary friction | Onboarding completion and time-to-Home |
| Family activation | First circle created, first invite accepted, first location shared, first place alert configured | Week-one retention 40% |
| Commerce conversion | First product journey started, first order completed | Trial to paid 25% in the R150–R400 corridor |
| Device activation | STARtag BLE delivered, then activated by QR | Delivery-to-activation completion |
| Response integrity | SOS submission availability, dispatch and arrival medians (eligible members) | 99.9% availability, medians published |
| Retention | Day-7 and day-30 active members | Reviewed against the Omnisient matched view |
Event tracking ships with the release so every measure is available from launch.
5. Scope
Four customer themes carry the December proposition. STARtag BLE is woven through Onboarding and Entry, Commerce and Payments, Assets and the shared map rather than being a fifth theme.
| Theme | Best-desired promise | Primary metric |
|---|---|---|
| Onboarding and Entry | Light onboarding for new and existing customers, reaching Home quickly, then prompting circle creation or adding protection. Includes STARtag BLE device onboarding | Entry activation |
| Family and Location Sharing | The free circle and live map, working in session one, with people, vehicles and STARtag BLE items distinguished | Family activation |
| SOS and Response | Verified response for eligible members. Non-eligible members see honest configurable states, never a false dispatch | Response integrity |
| Commerce and Payments | Fitted vehicle products via fitment, STARtag BLE via delivery and QR activation, both in-app with product-specific fulfilment | Commerce conversion, device activation |
6.1 Onboarding & Entry
Purpose: get any person into MyNetstar quickly, capturing only the minimum needed to establish the account and meet confirmed compliance, then let Home guide the next step. The platform, not the customer, decides the branch after OTP. ▶ Run it in the prototype
Journey A · New customer (light onboarding)
Splash → mobile number → OTP → minimum personal details (first name, surname, email; identity only where genuinely required) → permissions (location, notifications, in customer language, declinable where legally possible) → account created automatically in CRM → Home. From Home, the customer is prompted to create a circle, add something they protect, or explore protection options.
Journey B · Existing customer (recognition)
Splash → mobile number → OTP → account recognised → confirm identity → existing estate loaded → Home. No re-registration. Nothing already held is re-asked unless it needs confirmation or correction. A circle is prompted from Home if none exists.
- Branch is determined by the platform on account match after OTP. The customer never chooses.
- Circle creation is not a barrier to Home. It is prompted prominently from Home and re-offered until completed.
- A new customer reaches Home with no invented assets, orders, payment methods or subscriptions.
- An existing customer reaches Home with the full linked estate loaded automatically.
- The customer is never forced through an irrelevant purchase journey to reach Home.
- The CRM account is created automatically from the onboarding data for a new customer.

Acceptance criteria (12)
AC-ON-01: A new customer completes number, OTP, minimum details and permissions in under four minutes on a mid-range Android. AC-ON-02: SMS fallback is one tap from the code screen, with a human path after three failures. AC-ON-03: For a new customer only name, surname and email are mandatory; identity is requested only where genuinely required and never re-asked of a recognised customer. AC-ON-04: Each permission explains the protection it enables and declining any still completes onboarding. AC-ON-05: Branch is set by account match after OTP; the customer never chooses. AC-ON-06: A recognised customer confirms identity and lands with the full estate loaded, nothing re-entered. AC-ON-07: A CRM account is created automatically from onboarding for a new customer. AC-ON-08: Existing assets and products link automatically on first sign-in. AC-ON-09: Home is reached without a mandatory circle-creation or purchase step. AC-ON-10: Home prompts circle creation prominently and re-offers it until a circle exists. AC-ON-11: A new-customer Home shows no invented assets, orders or payment methods. AC-ON-12: A changed-number path is offered on the number screen.6.2 Family & Location Sharing
Purpose: a free, private circle with a live shared map. Circle creation is prompted from Home, not forced in onboarding. The map carries people, vehicles and STARtag BLE items with distinct visual treatment and accurate status language for each. ▶ Create a circle · ▶ Open the map

| F-027 | Safety zones with time windows | Should |
| F-029 | Household topology with granular roles | Should |
| F-031 | GPS child watch integration | Could |
Acceptance criteria (9)
AC-FA-01: Circle created and named in under one minute, first member joined in under two. AC-FA-02: Invites via WhatsApp, SMS and shareable link, each producing a join that requires only number and OTP. AC-FA-03: Positions update without manual refresh with every fix timestamped. AC-FA-04: Map usable within two seconds on a mid-range Android. AC-FA-05: Stale positions marked with last-seen; status language matches the asset type, with no vehicle telematics status on a BLE item and no BLE proximity status on a fitted vehicle unless supported. AC-FA-06: People, vehicles and STARtag BLE items are visually distinguishable on one map. AC-FA-07: Per-circle controls with pause, consistent with POPIA. AC-FA-08: Avatars and asset photos upload with validation, permission and storage handling where enabled. AC-FA-09: A member who has no circle is prompted from Home until one exists.6.3 SOS & Response
Purpose: one tap reaches verified armed and medical response for eligible members. SOS is delivered through Netstar Companion, a standalone response membership that is a product in its own right, not part of the vehicle packages. ▶ Open Safety and hold SOS. The entitlement toggle demonstrates configurable states.
- SOS is enabled by an active Netstar Companion membership, a standalone product independent of any vehicle product or STARtag BLE tag.
- Companion is offered in three monthly tiers: Companion Core (R89), Companion Pro (R109) and Companion Lux (R135), with family members added at R15 per person per month. App-only response is available from roughly R69–R89 depending on promotion or bundle.
- The experience supports eligible and non-eligible states, driven by Companion membership status.
- An eligible member receives the verified response journey: confirm, dispatch, check in, report back. Notify-circle is optional per SOS.
- A non-eligible member is never shown a false dispatch confirmation. Activating SOS surfaces Companion plans; no dispatch request is created.
| ID | Feature | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| F-032 | One-tap SOS with armed response dispatch (eligible) | Must |
| F-033 | Medical response dispatch (eligible) | Must |
| F-113 | SOS entitlement engine, configurable rules, locked state with protection offer | Must |
| F-034 | Circle notification with live incident view (optional to the member) | Must |
| F-035 | SOS status states | Must |
| F-036 | Verified response protocol with check-in cadence | Must |
| F-037 | Silent, discreet SOS | Must |
| F-039 | Degraded-mode SOS with control-room fallback | Must |
| F-040 | Lock-screen SOS (eligible members) | Must |
| F-043 | Emergency contacts and protocols | Must |
Acceptance criteria (10)
AC-SO-01: For an eligible member SOS is one tap from Home, Safety and the lock screen, never behind authentication. AC-SO-02: Live location transmitted with every dispatch request. AC-SO-03: Entitlement is evaluated at sign-in and on every subscription change, and reflected in the UI within one session. AC-SO-04: A non-eligible member activating SOS is shown protection options and no dispatch request is created. AC-SO-05: Circle members receive a push within seconds that deep-links to the incident view, where the member has opted to notify the circle. AC-SO-06: Status states surfaced: received, verified, dispatched, en route. AC-SO-07: The check-in cadence is stated and honoured, with delays explained. AC-SO-08: The silent long-press SOS produces no sound and no visible screen change. AC-SO-09: Under degraded connectivity SOS queues, retries and falls back to a control-room call. AC-SO-10: Qualifying rules are configuration, not code, and the locked state routes to the purchase journey in one tap.6.4 Commerce & Payments
Purpose: sell and fulfil the range in-app with product-appropriate routes. Fitted vehicle products follow a fitment route with in-app slot selection where operationally possible. STARtag BLE follows a delivery and QR-activation route. The meeting favoured customer self-service over routing every sale through a consultant. ▶ Run the buy flow
A · Fitted vehicle products
Examples: Netstar Basic, Netstar Early Warning, Netstar Plus. Desired route: choose product → vehicle details → verified quote → payment method → fitment address → choose home (mobile fitment) or fitment centre → calendar scheduler: pick a date and time slot → confirm with WhatsApp booking, reminders and technician details → confirm order → fitment tracking → successful fitment → subscription activation and billing.
- The customer completes the sale and fitment booking in-app, without returning to the public website.
- The customer enters a fitment address, then chooses home (mobile fitment at that address) or a fitment centre. A nearest centre is offered when centre is chosen.
- A calendar scheduler presents available dates and time slots. Home fitment offers arrival windows; centre fitment offers appointment times. Availability reflects the scheduler where integration allows.
- Booking, reminders and technician details are confirmed to the customer on WhatsApp.
- Where real-time scheduler availability is not yet integrated, the same calendar captures the customer's preferred date and window and a consultant confirms, preserving all data. Consultant intervention is a fallback, not the default journey.
- Recurring billing for fitted products begins after successful fitment. In-app and WhatsApp order and fitment notifications are provided.
B · STARtag BLE
STARtag BLE requires no fitment. Route: choose STARtag BLE → item or use-case selection → quantity → delivery details → payment → fulfilment → delivery tracking → QR activation → active. See Section 6.5 for the full journey.
C · Assisted-completion products
Where a product genuinely cannot yet complete fully in-app, the app captures the lead and all available information, confirms exactly what happens next, shows the assigned order state, preserves progress and states an expected response period. Generic “someone will call you” wording without status or accountability is not used.
Payment
- Hosted payment capture and tokenisation. Netstar never stores full card details.
- R1 card verification where required, automatically reversed.
- Existing valid payment methods and debit orders are reused where appropriate. No unnecessary re-entry.
- Billing activation is product-specific: fitted products activate after successful fitment; STARtag BLE activates after a commercially approved event (see decision below).
- Pricing shows the current approved rate card, or clearly labelled illustrative values in the prototype. No invented pricing.
| ID | Feature | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| F-069 | Product catalogue in-app (fitted products and STARtag BLE) | Must |
| F-070 | Honest, product-specific order states | Must |
| F-072 | Add a vehicle by its plate with verified quote | Must |
| F-117 | In-app fitment booking: address, home-or-centre, calendar scheduler, WhatsApp confirmation | Must |
| F-073 | Payment method capture, reuse and PayFast tokenisation | Must |
| F-118 | In-app order and fulfilment tracking with notifications | Must |
| F-112 | Product-specific billing activation event | Must |
| F-111 | Assisted-sale fallback with accountable order state | Should |
| F-074 | Existing debit order reuse and DebiCheck where mandated | Must |
| F-077 | Free cancellation before fitment or before activation | Must |
Acceptance criteria (11)
AC-CO-01: The catalogue lists fitted products and STARtag BLE with rate-card pricing shown before commitment. AC-CO-02: Order states are honest and product-specific; no state claims cover before fitment (fitted) or before activation (BLE). AC-CO-03: Plate lookup with manual fallback and a verified quote on one screen. AC-CO-04: Fitted products complete an in-app fitment booking: address capture, home-or-centre selection, a calendar date-and-time picker, and a WhatsApp confirmation of booking, reminders and technician details; where live scheduler availability is not integrated the same calendar captures preferred availability and preserves all data. AC-CO-05: An existing customer is offered their stored payment method or debit order first, and can add another; a new method is captured hosted by PayFast. AC-CO-06: Every new or replacement method is tokenised through PayFast and verified with a reversed R1 transaction; Netstar never receives the card number. AC-CO-07: Recurring billing activates only on the product-specific event; a failed or cancelled fulfilment collects nothing. AC-CO-08: Fitted-product billing activates on successful fitment. AC-CO-09: STARtag BLE billing activates on the commercially approved event, marked as a decision. AC-CO-10: Order and fulfilment tracking is available in-app with notifications. AC-CO-11: Cancelling before fitment or before activation is free and stated at payment.6.5 STARtag BLE journey
STARtag BLE is the Bluetooth tag proposition for pets and portable belongings: a pet, keys, bag, bicycle, laptop, luggage or another valuable item. It is a distinct product from STARtag, the vehicle-linked recovery product. STARtag BLE has its own purchase, delivery, pairing and activation journey. ▶ Run the STARtag BLE flow
Purchase and fulfilment
Home or Assets → Add something you protect → STARtag BLE → choose item type → quantity and pricing → delivery details → payment method → order confirmation → delivery tracking → delivered → activate. Item types may include pet, keys, bag, bicycle, laptop, luggage or other valuable item; category availability is configuration and some categories require commercial confirmation. Fulfilment is via an approved logistics provider (integration is a dependency, not hard-coded here). Order states: order placed, preparing for dispatch, dispatched, out for delivery, delivered, ready to activate, activated. No state claims the item is protected before activation.
QR activation and pairing
After delivery: open the STARtag BLE activation journey → scan the QR code on the packaging or device → validate the device identifier → follow physical activation instructions → pair the device to the account → select what the tag protects → name the item → optionally upload a photo (subject to feasibility) → select or create an owner → select the family circle or sharing settings → confirm permissions and privacy → see the item in Assets and on the map. Manual code entry and a support route are provided if the QR cannot be scanned.
| ID | Feature | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| F-120 | STARtag BLE catalogue with item-type selection | Must |
| F-121 | STARtag BLE delivery capture and fulfilment request | Must |
| F-122 | STARtag BLE delivery tracking with honest states and notifications | Must |
| F-123 | QR-code activation with manual entry fallback | Must |
| F-124 | Device pairing, naming, optional photo, owner and circle assignment | Must |
| F-125 | STARtag BLE asset detail and map visibility | Must |
| F-126 | Activation failure and recovery states | Must |
Acceptance criteria (9)
AC-BLE-01: STARtag BLE is purchasable with item-type selection, quantity, delivery capture and payment, separate from any fitted-product flow. AC-BLE-02: A fulfilment request is sent to the approved logistics provider and order status is available in-app with notifications. AC-BLE-03: Delivery states progress order placed → preparing → dispatched → out for delivery → delivered → ready to activate → activated, and no state claims protection before activation. AC-BLE-04: Activation scans the QR, validates the identifier and provides physical activation guidance. AC-BLE-05: The device pairs to the account, is named, optionally photographed, and assigned an owner and circle. AC-BLE-06: Manual code entry and a support route are available if the QR cannot be scanned. AC-BLE-07: Activation failure states are handled without restarting: invalid QR, already activated, device not found, pairing failure, connectivity failure, battery or hardware issue, item linked to another order. AC-BLE-08: The activated item appears in Assets and on the map with BLE-appropriate status only. AC-BLE-09: Vehicle telematics fields (fitment certificate, ignition, trips, unit health) never appear on a STARtag BLE item.6.6 Assets experience
Purpose: Assets represents the full estate, not a shop. It shows existing vehicles and vehicle products, STARtag vehicle products, STARtag BLE devices, and items in progress, with acquisition available as one action within managing the estate. ▶ Open Assets
| Card | Example label |
|---|---|
| Vehicle with fitted product | Toyota Hilux · Netstar Plus · Protected |
| Vehicle with STARtag | VW Polo · STARtag · Active |
| STARtag BLE item | Bella · Pet · STARtag BLE · Last seen 8 minutes ago |
| Pending BLE activation | Keys · STARtag BLE · Delivered, activation required |
| Pending fitment | VW Polo · Netstar Basic · Awaiting fitment |
Acquisition options: add a vehicle, add vehicle protection, buy STARtag BLE, activate a delivered STARtag BLE, add another protected item. STARtag BLE detail shows name, photo, item type, owner, assigned circle, last seen, connection or proximity state, battery where supported, activation date, device identifier, sharing controls, mark-as-lost where supported, remove or transfer, and support. Vehicle telematics fields are not shown on a STARtag BLE item.
Acceptance criteria (6)
AC-AS-01: All linked assets render with live, type-appropriate protection status on entry. AC-AS-02: Vehicles, vehicle STARtag and STARtag BLE devices use distinct cards and statuses; “Keys STARtag” never appears. AC-AS-03: Items in progress show honest states: awaiting fitment, delivered-activation-required, out for delivery. AC-AS-04: Each asset opens to a type-appropriate detail view. AC-AS-05: Acquisition actions are present but never dominate the estate view. AC-AS-06: An empty estate shows the estate frame with acquisition offered, not a shop-first screen.6.7 Settings
The burger menu carries the settings surface required by the journeys. Vehicle products and STARtag BLE devices are listed separately, never as an ambiguous “Linked STARtags”. ▶ Open Settings

8. Assumptions, dependencies and decisions required
Commercial decisions
SOS entitlement and pricing; product qualification rules for SOS; STARtag BLE pricing and subscription model and its billing trigger; the approved product catalogue and rate card; whether STARtag BLE is in the December release or sequenced shortly after; product and category availability.
Operational dependencies
Fitment scheduling accuracy; fitment-centre and mobile-technician capacity; assisted-sale fallback ownership; logistics fulfilment and delivery tracking; customer-support ownership; recovery support for STARtag BLE items.
Technical dependencies
CRM account creation; existing-customer recognition; automatic asset linking; product catalogue integration; payment tokenisation; scheduler integration; logistics-provider integration; QR activation service; BLE pairing and device status; image storage and retrieval; map support for people, vehicles and BLE assets; event tracking; notification channels; POPIA consent and data handling.
Governance decisions
The final December cut; best-case scope versus engineering-feasible scope; which capabilities may release in January or February if they do not fit December; the authoritative decision-makers for scope and entitlement. The transcript records a chicken-and-egg: the business case needs scope, scope needs the business case. The approach is to present the best-desired scope, have engineering size and cost it, then cut by effort.
9. Out of scope
STARtag BLE is included in the best-case requirements for engineering sizing and commercial prioritisation. Its final December inclusion remains subject to scope, cost and feasibility approval, and it may be sequenced to a January or February launch if it does not fit December.
Minimum STARtag BLE journey (in scope for sizing): purchase, delivery tracking, QR activation, asset creation and map visibility. Future STARtag BLE functionality (out of scope): advanced community finding, sophisticated lost mode, extended recovery networks, automation, analytics, multiple accessory types and other capabilities not yet approved.
Also out of scope for this release: deeper self-service and servicing beyond the journeys above, the full notification centre, adjacent propositions, behaviour-driven personalisation, insurance and driver-behaviour propositions, and scam protection (pursued as a partner evaluation). Vehicle and Telematics is the existing product; customers continue on current functionality and only the integration points required by the four themes are in scope.
A recovery that happened. A family on one map. Protection for the things that matter.
